The Water Motif

The Water motif of a Qing Dynasty robe is found along the bottom of the robe. The many colored bands represent the depths of the oceans. Among the billowing clouds and mist are symbols of longevity and happiness can be found. There are also a few images of water dragons. The mountain pushing up from the water is a symbol of China as a land mass that is completely surrounded by water. The mountain image is seen at the front and back center of the robe and at the sides.
