I am a non-music major; can I be in any choir?

Absolutely! Every choir is open to all students regardless of his/her major.

Do I have to audition?

The Men's, Women's, and Kent Choruses do not require an audition. A very simple voice-placement check is made to determine the best section in which to place you. Only the KSU Chorale requires an audition.
Voice testing and auditions will be held on the first three days of classes. Come to your first choir class, and you will receive further information regarding this matter. For further information, visit the Audition web page.

I have not signed up for choir; is it too late?

No. Changing your schedule is simple. You can do so by contacting your academic advisor or by following the "Step-By-Step, Voice Response Registration Process" at http://www.registrars.kent.edu/home/Info/RegSteps.HTM. (Changes to your class schedules must be made before the end of the second week of classes.)

Can I sing in more than one choir?

Absolutely, and many of our students do.

Does participating in choir take up a lot of time?

No. Unlike many high school choral programs that often have one or two actively performing groups, KSU has five performing ensembles (four choirs and the Ars Nova Singers). We spread the programs out among these groups which lessens the performance time of any one choir.

As a freshman, will I have time to be in a choir?

Absolutely, and many freshmen do sing with us. All of our choirs are active and perform each semester; however, the directors are sensitive to the needs of their members and attempt to keep the demands on students' time limited.

No doubt you will be working and studying hard, but you will need to have some fun as well. If you don't, you will probably self-destruct in about one or two semesters. It is important to study and work, but this must be balanced with healthy recreation as well.

Singing in a choir can make an important contribution to your success in your academic classes. Why not make your recreational time a time in which you can have an enjoyable experience and one that will help you grow in every aspect of your life?

What do you mean "grow in every aspect of my life"? What benefits will I receive from singing in a choir?

It is well documented that, if a person becomes involved in some form of music making, he or she will make a more significant contribution to society; will perform better in school; will develop greater intellectual skills in all disciplines; and will be more successful in life. In other words,

If you want to make better grades? Join a choir.
If you want to be more successful in college? Join a choir.
If you want to develop better social skills, meet and develop life-long friendships? Join a choir.
If you want to be more successful in your chosen profession? Join a choir.
