Ivan Chan, a native of Hong Kong, is first violinist of the acclaimed Miami String Quartet. Prior to joining the ensemble, Chan was a frequent participant at the Marlboro Music Festival and has toured extensively with “Musicians from Marlboro.” He has collaborated with artists from the Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio, the Beaux Arts Trio, the Guarneri, Cleveland, Juilliard, Orion, Emerson quartets, Opus 1 ensemble and Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. In spring of 2007, Chan was one of the featured artists on Live From Lincoln Center’s “Goodnight Alice Tully” program.  
As a soloist, he has appeared with the Detroit Symphony, the Houston Symphony, the Hong Kong Philharmonic, the Hong Kong Sinfonietta, the Indianapolis Symphony, the Ohio Chamber Orchestra, and the New World Symphony.  Chan garnered  top prizes in numerous competitions including the Third Quadrennial Indianapolis International Violin Competition, the Ima Hogg Young Artist Auditions, the Washington International Competition and the Julius Stulberg Auditions. As a soloist, he has appeared with the Detroit Symphony, the Houston Symphony, the Hong Kong Philharmonic, the Hong Kong Sinfonietta, the Indianapolis Symphony, the Ohio Chamber Orchestra, and the New World Symphony.
Chan is on faculty at the Kent State University School of Music, the Hartt School and Encore School for Strings. He has given master classes and chamber music coachings at the Curtis Institute of Music( his Alma Mater,) the Cleveland Institute of Music, Temple University and Western Michigan University.
The Miami String Quartet he has appeared extensively throughout the United States and Europe. Highlights of recent seasons include performances in New York at Lincoln Center Alice Tully Hall, Carnegie Weil Hall, 92nd Street Y,engagements in Boston, Indianapolis, Los Angeles, New Orleans, San Francisco, Seattle, St. Paul, and its own concert series in Palm Beach, Florida. International highlights include appearances in Bern, Cologne, Istanbul, Lausanne, Montreal, Rio de Janeiro, Hong Kong, Taipei and Paris. The Quartet has recently toured with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and they appear annually at the Philadelphia Chamber Music Society. In 2002 the Miami String Quartet made its debut at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and the Kennedy Center. 2007 marks the 20th Anniversary of the Miami String Quartet’s formation.
In the spring of 2003, the Miami Quartet was named visiting Quartet in Residence at the Hartt School in Hartford, CT. In the fall of 2004, members of the Miami String Quartet became artists in residence at Kent State University School of Music. Winners of the Cleveland Quartet Award presented by Chamber Music America, the Miami String Quartet has served as Quartet in Residence at Florida International University and was also the resident ensemble of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center Chamber Music Society Two from 1999-2001. During the summer season, the Miami String Quartet serves as quartet in residence at Music from Angel Fire.
The Miami String Quartet has recorded under BMG/Conifer, Pyramid, Musical Heritage and CRI labels.
