Patricia Ann Grutzmacher is an associate professor of music, the director of instrumental music, and the music department coordinator at Kent State Stark. She has been a member of the Kent State Stark faculty since 1983. She teaches music education courses, cultural history courses in western and non-western music, applied oboe and chamber music ensembles, and is the founder and conductor of the Kent State Stark Concert Band. She is a diplomate of the Sudler Order of Merit presented by the John Philip Sousa Foundation to recognize her contributions to the excellence of bands and band music performance. Her biography is listed in the 1998 edition of Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers. In April 2001, she was presented an award by the American Association of University Women for her achievements in programming and promoting university diversity events. She received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Akron, a master’s degree from Ohio State University and a doctorate from Kent State University. Prior to her work at Kent State, she taught general and instrumental music in the Wooster City Schools. She is a past recipient of the Kent State University Stark Campus Distinguished Teaching Award. An accomplished oboist, Grutzmacher performed for many years with the Akron and Canton Symphony Orchestras and the Blossom Festival Concert Band. She recorded with the Cleveland Symphonic Winds under Frederick Fennell and currently performs with the Sounds of Sousa professional band. Reflecting her versatility as a music educator, Grutzmacher has presented general music sessions for OMEA Districts V, VI, and VIII, for the Cleveland Parochial Schools and at state and national conferences. She has conducted high school honor bands in OMEA District VIII in Wayne County, Medina County, Tuscarawas County and Twinsburg, Ohio, and has guest conducted at OMEA conferences. She has directed arts integration projects in numerous school systems in a four-county area and has made presentations on curricular arts integration at international, regional, and state professional conferences.
