Dr. John Madison Lee is currently Professor of Theory and Composition at Kent State University.  Prior to coming to Kent State, he served from 1987-96 as Professor of Music and Head of the Division of Fine Arts at Northeast Missouri State University (renamed Truman State University in July 1996); from 1982-87 and 1976-82 as Associate Professor and Assistant Professor of Music Theory, respectively, at the University of Texas at Arlington; from 1974-76 as Assistant Professor of Music Theory at the University of Kentucky; and from 1972-74 and 1970-72 as Assistant Professor and Instructor of Music Theory and Applied Piano, respectively, at Sweet Briar College.

His compositions have been performed in Virginia, Kentucky, Texas, Missouri, Ohio, and in England. He has also given both solo and ensemble performances as a pianist at various universities and colleges in several states.

Dr. Lee has written the instructor’s manual for two theory texts by Robert W. Ottman, published by Prentice Hall, and has authored articles in The Piano Quarterly, College Music Symposium, The Diapason, and In Theory Only: Journal of the Michigan Music Theory Society. He has written music for three films and a commercial, and has presented a number of invited research papers dealing with varied topics in music theory.
