Zeta Sigma, Cleveland Area Chapter of Delta Omicron International Professional Music Fraternity, began organizing in 1953; it became an alumnae chapter in 1960. In 1978, we awarded our first scholarship of $100 to Robert Judd, who offered to present a program for us. We now ask our recipient to perform for us, which gives us an opportunity to become acquainted. Our award has grown to the current $500 and we present it to a worthy member of Delta Upsilon Chapter of Delta Omicron. Through this award, we meet several of Delta Omicron's objectives: to create and foster fellowship through music; to give aid to worthy students; and to perform service.
The Zeta Omicron Chapter of the Delta Omicron International Music Fraternity was organized in the late 1940s and received its charter as an Alumnae Chapter in 1956. That same year, the Zeta Omicron Chapter began offering scholarships to Kent State University music students. The first recipient was Ann Lee Metcalf, and the award was $100. Since that time, the annual award has grown to $300. The award is based on achievement and exemplary service to the musical arts, the University, and the School of Music. Our scholarship recipients perform for the Chapter at our annual spring brunch.
Together with our scholarship recipients, we try to emulate our motto:
"Continually striving, we attain.
Dr. Gates Morgan and friends established the Dolores Parker Morgan Scholarship in 1986 to honor well-known Akron performer, Dolores Parker Morgan. Ms. Morgan enjoyed a distinguished career as a vocalist in the Duke Ellington Orchestra as well as with many other notable bands. She starred in many movies with such legendary performers as Nat King Cole and Edward G. Robinson. She has received many awards, including the 1989 International Honorary Membership in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority.
The Frances Crawford Memorial Award is named for contralto Frances Crawford, who performed as a recitalist and oratorio soloist in northeast Ohio. A native of Akron, Mrs. Crawford attended Graceland College in Iowa, Western Reserve University, and graduated from the University of Akron. For thirty-six years she held the position of contralto soloist at the First Congregational Church of Akron. She appeared as soloist with the Defiance Choral Society, the Fort Wayne Symphony, the Akron Symphony Orchestra, the Kansas City Philharmonic, and the Lakeside Symphony. Frances was known and admired by many for her devotion to the arts.
The Lily-Christine Wallach Scholarship was established in 1987 by the generous gift of Arthur E. Wallach to honor Lee’s accomplishments in music and to proliferate her love of music in our lives. She graduated cum laude from Kent State University in 1951 receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Education with a major in music. She enjoyed an 18 year career as an educator both in music and as an elementary teacher in the Summit and Portage County area. Ms. Wallach was also very active in local organizations supporting education and the arts such as the Children’s Concert Society. The Scholarship is normally awarded once every four years to a high school senior whose performance area is piano and intended major is music education. The recipient is selected based on letters of recommendation, academic record, and after auditioning for and being interviewed by selected School of Music faculty. The applicants also submit an essay related to the candidate’s pre-college musical and non-musical activities.
The M. Ellis Fjeld Scholarship was established in the year 2000 in honor of this Viet Nam War veteran. This award is intended to encourage students who have demonstrated the capacity to achieve educational and professional goals, the motivation to achieve them and the initiative to seek opportunities to further their progress. The recipient must be a music major who is a student of the French horn. Priority considerations are given to 1) a descendant of a Viet Nam veteran; 2) a full or part-time member or former member of the United States Armed Forces; 3) a student who has no relationship or involvement with the Armed Forces.
The Frederic F. Schoettler Music Scholarship in Piano Performance honors Fred Schoettler, associate professor of piano and member of the Kent State University School of Music faculty from 1964 until his retirement in 1995. Fred was a founding member of the Kent Trio with violinist John Dempsey and clarinetist Frederick Cohen. The trio received critical acclaim at their Carnegie Recital Hall debut and performed many times in northeast Ohio during its eight-years of partnership. Fred and his wife, Theresa Dye Schoettler, were well-known performers of the piano duet and piano-duo repertory. They recorded for the Orion label. After Fred’s death in 1998, the scholarship was established to further the education of piano students of outstanding pianistic and musical skills.
The Leopold Sipe Award is named for Professor Sipe, founder of the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, and professor of violin and conductor of the Kent State University Orchestra from the late 1970s-1980. Sipe and Benjamin McGinnis were instrumental in the organization of the Kent Orchestra Society in 1972. Since 1993, the Orchestra Society has presented an annual award in Sipe’s name to players who are selected by the director of the orchestra and peers.
The Benjamin G. and Marie A. McGinnis Chair honors Benjamin McGinnis, a co-founder of the Kent State University Orchestra Society, and his wife Marie. Benjamin McGinnis, the first President of the Orchestra Society, was a Kent State University graduate. He served on the University's staff from 1949-1981. At the time of his retirement, Dr. McGinnis was Associate Vice President for Student and Academic Affairs. Following Dr. McGinnis's death in 1987, his widow, Marie, and the Orchestra Society established the Benjamin G. McGinnis Chair, which is held by the Concertmaster of the Kent State University Orchestra. Now the Chair is named in honor of both Ben and Marie.
The G. Frank Elgin Cello Chair was established by Mildred Elgin Bumphrey in memory of her father. Mrs. Bumphrey was a charter member of the Kent State University Orchestra Society and has been closely tied to the University community and its fine musical traditions for over 70 years. Mrs. Bumphrey credits much of her development as an educator, musician, and philanthropist to her father, a prominent Kent optometrist and an accomplished musician.
The Roy. D. Metcalf Award is named for Kent State University music professor Roy Metcalf, a member of the music faculty from 1929 until his death in 1954. Metcalf founded the University’s first student marching band and later developed it into nationally famous twin marching bands. The bands performed annually at Cleveland Browns football games and made public appearances, such as a performance at a Philadelphia Municipal Stadium charity event. Metcalf was the founder and first president of the Ohio Inter-Collegiate Band Association. Beta Psi chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi, the national men’s band honorary, and Alpha Gamma chapter of Tau Beta Sigma, the national women’s band honorary, were established on the Kent campus through his efforts.
