The voice division of the Hugh A. Glauser School of Music at Kent State University offers a comprehensive vocal education based upon a foundation of healthy vocal instruction, challenging course offerings and exciting, unique performance opportunities. The voice faculty is committed to preparing students for a professional music career in the classroom or on the stage.
Vocal majors receive weekly individual lessons with faculty members who are dedicated to the utmost standard of vocal instruction. Art song, opera, operetta and musical theatre repertoire afford students the opportunity to explore the art of singing with sound pedagogical techniques. Studio class, Voice Musicale, the School of Music Convocation, master classes and solo recitals permit students to perform individually at regular intervals throughout their degree program.
Students receive extensive training in vocal pedagogy as well as Italian, French, German and English diction. Additional classes enable students to explore the literature of opera and art song. This instruction not only prepares students with the skills necessary to successfully teach the art of singing but also elevates the level of their own musicianship.
Opera Workshop teaches students comprehensive stage acting techniques that adhere to stylistic considerations. Operatic coaching and stage direction in a variety of musical settings are core components of the curriculum. Programs of operatic scenes offer an overview of the literature while allowing students of varying abilities to portray leading roles. Accompanied by the Kent State University Orchestra, students experience singing with a large ensemble in full-length operas. Recent fully staged productions include Le Nozze di Figaro, Die Fledermaus, Il barbiere di Siviglia, L’elisir d’amore and La Traviata.
Students can earn the following degrees with voice as their major: Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance, Bachelor of Music in Music Education, Master of Music in Vocal Performance
