The Center for the Study of World Musics was founded in 1980 to oversee all ethnomusicalogical actvities of the School of Music at Kent State University. Since that time it has received both national and international recognition for its activities in education, scholarship and performance.

The mission of the Center emphasizes four principal areas:

  - Basic scholarly research in the many musical systems of the world.
  - The study of African traditional and urban musics through performance taught by native musicians.
  - The preparation of skilled teachers of world musics and ethnomusicology.
  - The dissemination of information on world musics through books, articles, professional papers, public lectures, and performances.

The Center for the Study of World Musics' office is in room D107 of the Music and Speech building, and can be reached by telephone at (330) 672-2172.
