The Matterhorn (seen at the right) and its village of Zermatt is a mecca for skiing and  mountaineeringEach year an estimated three million persons take the mountain cogwheel railway to Gornergrat for the views.  Skiing is virtually a year-round activity there. The Matterhorn is accessible by cable car (photo below▼).  Chamonix is nearby in France with Mont-Blanc, Europe's highest mountain. Take the cable car to the Aigle du Midi for fabulous view of glaciers and craggy peaks.  The ride is arguably one of the most exciting in the world and the one to the Matterhorn fails in comparison.

Grindelwald is the largest ski village in the region and is under the north face of the Eiger.  The village is also a great place for day hikes.  And you can call at the top.

The Jungfrau region has some of Switzerland's best scenery and skiing with the summits of the Jungfra, Moch and Eiger which can be seen from points accessible by cable car  or railway.  The ice palace at Jungraujoch's summit can be reached by the highest railway in Europe.  The ski slopes of Zermatt are a three hour train ride from Geneva.  Matt was there to ski and see the St. Bernards.
