Kent State University offers a full range of activities for students including cultural events, lectures and international films. Most of these activities are free or very inexpensive with your FLASHcard ID. We encourage you to take advantage of these activities and to participate in them, both as a way to meet students and as a way to learn more about the United States. Kent Student Center The Office of Campus Life is dedicated to providing social and educational activities for all university students. For the international students, the Office of Campus Life offers programs to help in the transition to an American university environment and to foster success and well-being in the University and local communities. It sponsors numerous educational, social, and cultural programs each year that foster intercultural understanding and appreciation. Most encompass activities are free to students. Among the activities of the Office are the following:
The University offers many lectures, concerts and cultural activities for students. Notices on bulletin boards in the Student Center and in the Daily Kent Stater provide information about these events. Some of the other cultural opportunities at the university are: The Architecture Gallery, in 201 Taylor Hall, exhibits student, faculty, and professional work. The All Campus Programming Board (ACPB) is a student organization. It presents films, known as “Flicks,” during fall and spring semester. These are popular, entertaining films at a reduced admission price. During the year ACPB sponsors lectures by important national leaders, concerts and special events. Student art is on display in the Art Building. Faculty, and professional art exhibitions are in the Main Gallery on the 2nd floor. The School's Gallery 138 for students is on 138 East Main Street in Kent. The Kent/Blossom Arts Festivals provide advanced summer study in art, music and theatre. The Blossom Center is about 20 minutes from Kent and is located on the edge of the beautiful Cuyahoga National Recreation Area. Blossom Center offers a range of live music and theatrical performances, ranging from classical to modern, from country western to pop and rock. The Center is the summer home of the Cleveland Orchestra, offering open-air concerts throughout the summer months that feature world-class soloists and vocalists. Blossom's Porthouse Theatre uses students and professional actors and actresses to charm audiences with their interpretations of classical and modern theatrical works. Kent/Blossom Music concerts each summer (most free) present outstanding students and guest artists from around the world. The Eelss Gallery is at the Blossom Center is open only in the summer and features rotating exhibitions of art. The Center of Pan-African Culture, Umbaji Art Gallery, and the African Community Theatre in Oscar Ritchie Hall provides many exhibits, programs and performances to promote and continue the cultural traditions of people of African descent. Among the Center's facilities are a photographic laboratory, art studio, library, gallery, and theater. Student's and faculty member's creations in glass are displayed on the second floor in the Michael Schwartz Center. The Kent State University Museum displays collections that span the centuries and a diversity of world cultures. The galleries include costumes, textiles, period furnishings, paintings, and glassworks. The exhibitions change every nine to twelve months. You may take the guided tour (for groups of fifteen or more) or you may explore the Museum on your own, in person. Student admission is free. . The Hugh A. Glauser School of Music presents student, faculty, and professional concerts each year at the Ludwig Recital Hall in the Music and Speech Center and at other locations. Most are free. The School of Theatre and Dance offers musical, theatrical and dance productions, and student recitals. Performances are in the E. Turner Stump Theatre or the Wright-Curtis Theatre in the Music and Speech Center. Special student ticket prices are available. . The Kent Student Center has a Music Listening Center on the second floor in a comfortable setting. It is open to all students with a valid KSU ID. In addition, it showcases student and faculty artwork. International Film Society The International Film Society (IFS) presents films to expand cultural awareness and to focus on specific social issues in today's societies. The IFS is a student organization and always open to new members. Films are at reduced rates for students. International Student Organizations International students at Kent State University come from more than 85 countries, with the largest concentrations representing China, India, and other Asian nations. Several organizations may be of special interest to international students. They may be contacted through the Centr for Student Involvement in the Kent Student Center. During the year the Campus Life Office sponsors several programs for international students. Some of these programs are summarized below. For more information please view the Office's website. Income tax assistance: International students and scholars who are currently studying or conducting research at Kent State University are being offered assistance and a tax software program to assist them with completing their federal income tax returns. The Host Family Program offers the opportunity to interact with Americans and become acquainted with American life. The student visits the host family occasionally about once per month and participates in social, family, and other activities. The First Weekers Hospitality Program assists new international students in making the transition from their home country to their "home away from home." This program is designed to provide a host to new students for approximately two weeks. This is not a program where the student lives with the host. The host will welcome and acquaint the new student(s) with the surrounding community and be a resource person. The Thanksgiving Hospitality Program provides a special opportunity to celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday with an American family. This program will emphasize the original meaning of Thanksgiving, natives and newcomers sharing, celebrating and giving thanks together. If you are unable to go home during our winter recess and would like to have the hospitality of an American family during this period, consider participating in the Winter Break Hospitality Program. Conversation Partners is for international students who would like to improve their English skills, learn more about the American culture, develop a new friendship and have lots of fun. International

Workshops and Special Programs In addition, each Fall and Spring semesters, social events are planned to bring International students on our campus together. Kent Student Center - On the plaza across from the Library The Student Center is where students gather, meet and relax. It is the location for casual conversations, many events, and meetings every day of the week. The Center's spacious bright atrium with a waterfall and curving staircase welcomes you. Around this entrance are the University Bookstore, FLASHcard Office, a convenience store and the Scheduling Office. You can reserve one of the Center's many rooms in the Scheduling Office for your meeting and your organization’s event. The website of the Scheduling Office in the Student Center has a calendar of events for the University. The Market in the Hub provides take away food and beverages. Next to the lobby is the Food Court. The Court has 7 fast food restaurants along with tables and chairs for 400. Students meet there to talk, read, study, have a sandwich and a soft drink. It is a place to relax and enjoy each others company. On the lower
level is a recently
renovated area that includes a coffee shop, post office, lounge,
fireplace
and computer stations, pool tables (3), big screen television. The curving staircase takes you to the second floor. On the second floor are lounge chairs to study or view events on the Student Center Plaza. The Kent State Student Credit Union/Bank is also on the second floor. The Ballroom is also on the second floor. This floor also has a music listening room, computer laboratory for undergraduate students, and a cafeteria. The Student Multicultural Center and lounge is in room 206. Meeting rooms are on the third floor along with the Schwebel Garden Room Restaurant. The Schwebel Garden Room is a favorite dining place that offers fine dining selections in a more elegant atmosphere. Daily luncheon buffets, including Sunday are available. The Student Center staff works with student organizations and academic departments to offer programs for the university and community. Among the popular and traditional annual events are the Black Squirrel Festival in the fall and Annual Yuletide Feast in December. Political Activity International students are often interested in opportunities to participate in political activity. The Constitution of the United States protects international students as well as citizens. It is the policy of the University to encourage the free expression of ideas and participation by all students, including activities involving political or social questions. International students have the same rights to freedom of expression as all other students, and they are encouraged to use these rights responsibly and without endangering other students or citizens. There are more than 230 registered student organizations on campus. These include academic, cultural, graduate, honorary, intramural and recreational clubs, the Daily Kent Stater (the campus newspaper), military, religious, service and special interest organizations. There are also fraternities and sororities for students (often referred to as the Greeks because of their Greek letter titles and names). The Office of Campus Life has complete information on student organizations. Joining an organization is a good way to meet Americans who share your interests and values. It is also an opportunity to gain and develop valuable leadership skills. Most of the organizations are open to both graduate and undergraduate students. Recreational activities and sports can be an important part of your Kent State experience. The Department of Recreation Services provides activities to University students, faculty and staff. Most activities are free to students because the cost is already included in the general fee for the semester. There is a small fee for some specialized activities and programs. A valid KSU ID is required. The University does not provide any medical or insurance coverage for injuries. The Student Recreation and Wellness Center has a natatorium (swimming and exercise pools), weight rooms, basketball courts, volleyball courts, racquetball and handball courts, cardiovascular fitness area, running/walking track, a climbing wall, a children's activity center, and a café. The Department sponsors several club teams and intramural activities. These include badminton, bowling, ice-skating and racquetball. Club teams include basketball, touch football, soccer, and hockey. Clubs that travel to different areas to participate in their activity include kayaking, sailing, downhill skiing, and climbing. There are also classes in fitness, aerobics, fencing, aikido, karate, and many others. Check with the Department's intramural office to see if your sport is represented on campus! Athletic teams sponsored by the University are composed of undergraduate student-athletes. These teams compete with other universities' teams in the Mid-American Conference (Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, and northern Kentucky). The official “nickname” of the athletic teams is the “Golden Flashes,” the mascot is the golden eagle, and the official colors are blue and gold. Women's sports include field hockey, volleyball, indoor and outdoor track, basketball, gymnastics, softball, cross-country, soccer and golf. Men's sports include football, basketball, cross-country, indoor and outdoor track, wrestling golf and baseball. Admission to athletic events us free with a valid KSU ID.
