LANGUAGE SKILLS

Students attending courses at the UAEM campus must be proficient in Spanish. Students attending CLAHPE are tested to determine their competency in Spanish and then placed in the appropriate level of study.  The placement is based on written and oral evaluations of language skills. If, after attending a class, a student finds that he/she needs to move to a different level that is possible.

HOUSING

Students live with a host family. Our application materials provide a housing questionnaire to help arrange a compatible placement. Host families are part of the program, and have ample experience in hosting students. Family meals are usually provided at breakfast and dinner. The cost of meals and housing are included in the program fees.

TRAVEL TO MEXICO

Travel maybe arranged by OIA, or, alternatively, participants may make their own travel arrangements. Usually flights depart from Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, normally flying to Chicago, and then to Mexico City (Aeropuerto Internacional Benito Juarez).

ACADEMIC ADVISING

Dr. Luis Hermosilla <lhermosi@kent.edu> in Kent State's Department of Modern and Classical Language Studies is the academic adviser for the exchange and will communicate with UAEM regarding the student’s study plan.

TRANSFER CREDIT

Students will be registered by OIA in OIA 10095 - Study Abroad, for zero credit hours during their attendance at UAEM. Although students will be registered for zero credit hours, they will be considered a full-time students. Upon their return, their work will be applied to their KSU record as transfer credit.

HEALTH ISSUES

At least four months before departure you should check with the immunization department of University Health Services, with your doctor, or with your county health department regarding immunizations/vaccinations needed. According to some sources, travelers may need Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, typhoid, and malaria pills.

ARRIVAL IN CUERNAVACA

Either a staff member from the international office at UAEM, or a host family member will meet students at the airport. Sometimes they will receive instruction on what bus to take to Cuernavaca, other times the representative will ride with them on the bus. When arriving to start classes at CLAHPE, or at UAEM, the student’s first stop is UAEM’s Direccion de Relaciones Internacionales, where they are met by staff and directed either to their university classes or escorted to CLAHPE.
