UAEM's Centro de Lengua, Arte e Historia Para Extranjeros (CLAHPE) was established in 1989 with the purpose of offering a complete program of Spanish language and Latin American studies to students from around the world. Upon successful completion of the program, students are issued a certificate from the University. Credits earned are transferable to many U.S. colleges and universities, including Kent State University.

ACADEMIC PROGRAM

Kent State University students may choose to attend: (1) the fall or spring semester, or (2) for an academic year. The program advisor recommends students "sign-up" for no more than a semester at CLAHPE.  Language classes at CLAHPE are offered up to the intermediate level, including two intermediate level classes. Upon arrival at UAEM, placement is based on written and oral evaluations of language skills. If, after attending a class, a student finds that he/she needs to move to a different level that is possible. The Center also offers courses on Mexican literature, art and Latin American history.

Classes are held for 6 hours daily (8:00 a.m. -  2:00 p.m.) Monday through Friday.  Class size is limited to a maximum of 5 students (8 in the summer). The class schedule is segmented into three hours of grammar, one hour of practice in conversation and two hours of various courses about Mexico and Latin America. Class materials include textbooks, different kinds of audio and audiovisual materials, magazines and newspapers.

CLAHPE FACILITIES

CLAHPE occupies the former residence of one of Mexico’s recent presidents, Luis Echeverria. The elegant, two-story colonial house has been fully remodeled to accommodate the language school. Its facilities include an auditorium, classrooms, beautiful and extensive gardens, a large swimming pool, a cafeteria, and a library.  Students have access to computers with Internet and email connections and a fax machine.

Laundry service is available for a nominal fee. The school is within walking distance of cafes, restaurants, athletic facilities, and banks. The Center is about 1.5 miles south of the main campus of UAEM and about two miles north of downtown Cuernavaca. The University may be reached by bus from CLAHPE. Students may take advantage of the facilities on the main campus, including computer centers, libraries, and athletic facilities.

ACTIVITIES

Optional activities are offered, such as Mexican cuisine, dancing, and handcrafts. Students may participate in organized excursions to local areas of interest to reinforce the cultural aspects of the learning experience. The places visited are all related to the history and the arts of Mexico. There may be a small fee of $10 - $15 to participate in an excursion.
