john updegraff, ph.d.


Primary Investigator

Dr. John Updegraff

Dr. John Updegraff is an Associate Professor of Social/Health Psychology.  He earned his Ph.D. in Social Psychology from the University of California, Los Angeles, and completed an NIMH-funded postdoctoral position at University of California, Irvine.

Dr. Updegraff's published his work in top-tier journals including Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, Health Psychology, Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, and Psychological Review, and has received funding from the National Cancer Institute and National Institute for Dental and Craniofacial Research for his work. Curriculum Vita

He can often be found pursuing his unhealthy obsession with making graphs, and occasionally playing guitar in his erstwhile band Wire Mother.

Graduate Students

 

 Amber Emanuel

Amber Emanuel is a 5th year experimental graduate student in the social-health program.   Amber comes to KSU from the masters program at American University in Washington DC, and completed her undergraduate work at Elizabethtown College.  Amber is interested in the motivations of the self that affect individuals' emotions and behaviors. Specifically, she conducts research on understanding the role of mindfulness in affective forecasting. She is also examining the utility of self-affirmations for health behavior change.

   
Kristel Gallagher

Kristel Gallagher is a 5th year experimental graduate student in the social-health program. Kristel comes to KSU after earning her bachelors at Waynesburg University (Pennsylvania) where she played 4 years of varsity softball.  Her research interests include message framing, health-related persuasion and health behavior change. She is particularly interested in improving people's adherence to exercise, and has studied how framing the various distinct outcomes of exercise influences exercise behavior.    
 
Originally from Toronto, Canada, she is a fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs and is also an avid runner.

   

Scout McCully is a 1st year experimental graduate student in the social-health program. She completed her undergraduate work at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington, and spent three years working as a project manager and business analyst at a web software company before coming to KSU. Scout’s research interests center around the adoption and maintenance of health behaviors. She is particularly interested in the factors which influence behavior change and maintenance in physical activity and nutrition.

Scout’s name comes from Harper Lee’s classic novel, To Kill a Mockingbird. She enjoys cooking vegan food, knitting, and finding fun new ways to be active, from hot yoga to spinning to kickboxing.
