2004 Program Dates: June 14 - August 13, 2004
Applications are solicited from qualified senior undergraduate and graduate students for the 2004 Scientific Outreach and Applications using Remote Sensing (SOARS) program sponsored by OhioView, Ohio Aerospace Institute (OAI), and EnviroScience Inc. Please fill out the attached application and send it to Dr. Mandy Munro-Stasiuk at Kent State University (contact details on the application form).
About SOARS
The SOARS program was established for the benefit of rising undergraduate seniors and graduate students pursuing degrees in remote sensing, GIS, and related disciplines. The program is intended to encourage high-caliber college students to both pursue and earn graduate degrees and to enhance their interest in remote sensing and GIS by exposing them to the professional research resources. This year the SOARS program will be held on Kent State University campus, in Kent, Ohio, under the directorship of Dr. Mandy Munro-Stasiuk.
This year’s program is sponsored by EnviroScience Inc. (http://www.enviroscienceinc.com), who would like to study the spread and nature of Eurasian watermilfoil (EWM) in the Great Lakes region using remote sensing. While interns can develop their own research, some of the basic questions to be addressed are:
· What is the aerial extent of EWM in selected Michigan lakes?
· How has this aerial extent changed over time?
· Is EWM growing at the expense of other habitats?
SOARS participants are required to
Complete a research project
Attend a two-day workshop, held on Kent State campus, by prominent engineers, scientists and professors
Collaborate on a final technical report
The stipend for the nine-week program is $4,000 paid in bi-weekly installments. This includes a $1,000 housing allowance.
***Applications are due by Wednesday May 26th ***
**Applicants will be informed of acceptance into the program by Friday May 28th **
