Centre information

The Centre of Methods and Policy Application in the Social Sciences (COMPASS) is based within the Faculty of Arts at The University of Auckland. It comprises a team of researchers with experience and expertise in a range of disciplines and research methodologies. The Centre is head by Professor Peter Davis.

 

COMPASS holds a number of externally-funded grants, including from the Health Research Council of New Zealand (HRC), the Marsden fund and the Foundation for Research, Science and Technology (FRST). The Research Centre has established collaborative links with Statistics New Zealand, AUT University, University of Otago’s Wellington School of Medicine, University of Canberra and The Australian National University. COMPASS collaborates on projects both nationally and internationally in the social sciences, health and statistics.

 

In addition, the Centre provides management and infrastructure for the New Zealand Social Statistics Network (NZSSN) and the New Zealand Social Science Data Service (NZSSDS). The former runs annual short course programmes in research methods and technology; the latter entails an archive of New Zealand social science survey data and metadata, with online data perusal and analysis via an interface powered by BeSTGrid and running Nesstar Software.

 
Primary Function

The primary function of this role is to provide support for, and preparation of, research outputs from the various research projects undertaken by COMPASS. This will include assisting with development of new research projects, and with funding applications, and contributing to peer-reviewed research outputs, with leadership of some. An important aspect of the role will involve management of staff, so a proven record of working successfully within teams is essential, combined with evidence of team leadership skills.

 
Duties and responsibilities

·       Managing projects and associated staff allocated to project tasks

·       Working alongside staff to undertake research tasks on existing projects

·       Assisting with the preparation of research funding proposals

·       Assisting with the production of peer-reviewed journal articles and academic research reports

·       Attending, and presenting papers at, academic conferences, where opportunities arise

·       Forming and/or maintaining effective research collaborations within the Faculty, the University and the wider national and international communities

·       Supervising and guiding other academic and research staff in the Research Centre

·       Contributing to local and national communities through involvement in the development of policy and practice.

Person Specification

·       The Research Fellow will preferably have a PhD qualification, but  candidates with good postgraduate qualifications and suitable work experience will also be considered

·       Background in quantitative methods in the social and allied sciences, such as sociology, social statistics, demography, public health, health or social psychology

·       Experience in working with quantitative data

·       Ability and/or experience in writing research funding proposals

·       Experience in working as part of a team

·       Ability to act independently and work to deadlines

·       Peer-reviewed publication record.

 
Salary
This is a two-year fixed-term position. Salary level will depend on experience, track record and qualifications.

The Criminal Justice Research Center at Ohio State University announces an opening for a Senior Research Associate with substantive interests in neighborhood effects and problem behaviors (e.g., adolescent drug use, delinquency, and other risk behaviors).  The Research Associate will work on a National Institutes of Health funded project examining neighborhood and activity space effects on health and risk behaviors as part of an interdisciplinary team including sociologists, geographers, and statisticians.

The Research Associate will be responsible for daily management and supervision of graduate research associates and will have an integral role in the conceptualization and organization of data analysis, formulation and preparation of papers for publication, report writing, and overall data management and documentation. 

Eligibility:  Candidates should have a Ph.D. in a relevant social science or related discipline, experience using advanced statistical methods and working with large-scale survey data, and excellent writing skills.  Experience with the Los Angeles Family and Neighborhood Survey or Geographic Information Systems software and spatial analysis are desirable. 

Appointment:  The start date is as soon as can be arranged.  The appointment is for two years.  Salary (with benefits) will depend on the experience/credentials of the appointee.
