The Milbank Quarterly

I encourage members of the Medical Sociology Section to consider the Milbank Quarterly as a publisher of their work. The Quarterly, published since 1923 by the Milbank Memorial Fund, is devoted to scholarly analysis of significant issues in health and health care policy. It presents original research, policy analysis, and commentary from academics, clinicians, and policy makers. The in-depth, multidisciplinary approach of the journal permits authors to explore fully the social origins of health in our society and to examine the implications of different health policies. Topics addressed in the Milbank Quarterly include the impact of social factors on health, prevention, care of chronic conditions, allocation of health care resources, legal and ethical issues in health care, hospital administration, and the organization and financing of health care. Many of the articles are of particular interest to sociologists. For example, last year an entire issue (Volume 76; issue 3) was devoted to articles about socioeconomic differences in health.

The Quarterly welcomes articles that are longer than many journals accept (up to 30 pages) and provides exposure to a large, interdisciplinary audience. Last year, the Quarterly was among the most frequently cited journals in the field. Of the 23 health policy journals tracked by the Social Science Citation Index, it had the third highest impact factor, surpassed only by Medical Care, and the Health Care Finance Review.

For information about recent issues, submission guidelines, and free access to featured articles, please visit our web page at: http://www.milbank.org/quarterly.html. If you submit an article, feel free to suggest reviewers who are expert in the area you are writing about. I prefer to use reviewers who are very knowledgeable about a particular area and who can provide the most useful feedback to authors.
