The dream begins
with a teacher who believes in you, who tugs and pushes and leads
you to the next plateau, sometimes poking you with a sharp stick
called "truth."

Annual Faculty
Brunch
Every year in November, each member of Mortar Board has the opportunity
to recognize a faculty member that has had a meaningful impact on his
or her academic experience. Faculty members are invited to a Sunday Brunch
and program held to honor their outstanding leadership and
commitment to scholarly excellence.
 |
This year's event was held on November 5, 2006 at the Triple Crown
Restaurant in Munroe Falls with 13 Faculty Guests, 17 Members, and
2 Faculty Advisors attending. |
Jera Oliver, Committee Chair and Master of Ceremony greeted each attendee
and orchestrated a flawless program.
Mortar Board President, Valerie Henry, welcomed the guests of
honor.
"In some way you have lifted us up so we could reach a little
higher
and see
just
a little
further
than
we
ever
could
have
managed
on
our own. Isaac Newton said it very well when he stated, 'If
I have seen a little further it is by standing on the shoulders
of giants.' You have transformed us in some way for the better
and that is a wonderful gift. It is a gift that will continue to
touch the people we meet as we move on to continue our education,
pursue careers, begin families, and strive to remain lifetime advocates
for the three ideals of Mortar Board – Scholarship, Leadership,
and Service." |
 |
 |
Following a delightful brunch, each member presented their honored
guest with a certificate of appreciation and Mortar Board coffee
mug filled with sweet treats. We listened to how each special person
had touched, challenged, and inspired their Mortar Board invitee.
Some were uplifting stories of helpfulness, others told of how
they struggled through a professor's class but found the challenge
extremely
rewarding. One member spent an hour each week discussing philosophy
with her guest despite never having had a class with him. We were
encouraged to follow our artistic passions (such as theatre, dance,
music, and art) throughout our lives even though they may not be
our major course of study.
|
| While the stories varied, they shared a common theme - the willingness
to enter into a relationship. "I teach
students, not subjects," was a quote from a faculty guest
shared with us by one emotional member. I believe each of our guests
share this fundamental philosophical truth. It is what sets them
apart and what makes them giants to us. |
 |
 |
Before departing, our Faculty Guests were asked to keep their coffee
mug in a prominent place. We hope it might start a conversation with
a colleague or two. In closing remarks, Valerie stated, "We
can only tell 36 of you a year, but you are touching us, changing
us, and inspiring us. Inspire them to live up to your example. You
do it every day, little by little, class by class, one student at
a time. Remind them and thank you for being one of our giants, for
helping us reach higher and see further." |
