Getting Connected
Staying Involved

Since you get more joy out of giving joy to others, you should put a good deal of thought into the happiness that you are able to give.
Eleanor Roosevelt

How Can I Be Selected?

Are you in your last semester of your junior year?
Are you already a college senior?
Do you have at least a cumulative GPA of 3.0?
Are you a leader on campus or in the community?
Do you have a record of service within the university or community?

If you can answer yes to all of these questions then you exemplify the ideals of Mortar Board and our ongoing commitment to

  • Scholarship
  • Leadership, and
  • Service

You should consider applying to this prestigious national organization during the Fall semester. The Laurels Chapter uses several resources to invite as many qualifying candidates as possible to apply, but anyone who meets these criteria can apply and will be considered, regardless of formal invitation.

We're sorry. The deadline has passed to apply online.
You may still download and complete a paper application and turn it in by Friday, February 15, 2007 - 12:00 noon. Our mailbox is located in the Center for Student Involvement Office, 2nd Floor Student Center.

Once received, applications are reviewed by the Mortar Board chapters based on their membership selection plan as approved by the national organization. Students are selected based on the national society's selection criteria. Local members then vote to select their final candidate choices and then submit that list of candidates to the Mortar Board National Office for final approval. Usually, no more than 50 new members will be voted into next year's chapter. Once approval is granted, "tapping" (invitations to join the society) begins in the Spring!

After being "tapped", new members are invited to participate in social events and ongoing projects to become familiar with the society and its current members. A formal orientation event will explain the history of the organization and answer any questions candidates may have about membership.

  • National Membership Fees are $60.
  • Local dues are decided each year by the local chapter. The Laurels Chapter Fees have remained $25 for the past three years.

Initiation into the society occurs later in the Spring semester and candidates are encouraged to invite their friends, families, and professors to help celebrate this memorable occasion in their academic career.

FAQ - revised 2/01/07

Do I have to be a full time student to apply?
No. Part time students are also encouraged to apply!

I will become a senior in the Spring next year, should I apply?
Yes. According to our constitution, if you have completed at least 60 credit hours (and meet all other criteria) you are eligible to apply. National guidelines suggest that you should intend on reaching senior status at some point during the academic year following your induction.

I will be studying abroad for a semester next year, will I still be considered for membership?
Yes, absolutely.

I will graduate in December 2007, should I apply?
Yes, please do!

I will be a senior for more than one year, do I have to wait until my last year as a senior to apply?
No, apply as soon as you are eligible. Mortar Board encourages returning seniors to continue to participate. Your experience, expertise, and leadership will benefit everyone!

If you have any other questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact an officer or advisor.
