What is Mortar Board?

Mortar Board recognizes college seniors for their achievements in

  • Scholarship
  • Leadership
  • Service

And provides opportunities for continued leadership development, promotes service to colleges and universities, and encourages lifelong contributions to the global community.

Mortar Board, Inc. is a national organization with more than 200 chapters and over 200,000 members. Founded in 1918, it was the nation's first national honor society for women. In 1975, membership was extended to include men.

While emphasizing ethics and integrity in leadership and academics, Mortar Board is known for its outreach in volunteer and philanthropic services to their local campuses, for the respect it engenders within instructions of higher education, and for its national and regional visibility.

Mortar Board is is well known for their outstanding, cost-effective programs and serving their local and global community. These efforts embody the core values of Mortar Board.

Value of the Individual. Every member brings unique strengths to the organization. Mortar Board supports each member's worth and dignity, helps develops each member leadership capabilities, and encourages a rewarding lifelong connection to the organization.

Excellence in Scholarship, Leadership and Service. Excellence is expressed by members by their dedication to use intelligence, skill, compassion, and integrity to exemplify the highest ethical standard.

Accountability. Both individually and collectively. Mortar Board members are expected to act with honesty, integrity, and openness, and to take responsibility for actions and their outcomes.

Honor with commitment. Mortar Board members are honored for their past achievements and committed to continue to serve and to actively participate in the local Chapter activities and service projects. Mortar Board celebrates its history and traditions, and calls upon each member to be responsible stewards of the Mortar Board legacy.
