Alpha Psi Lambda is a co-educational fraternity geared towards the goals of Latino/a students on university campuses. As the fastest growing minority in this country, it is becoming more and more important that Latino/a people continue their education. This trend has also brought with it a need for cultural awareness, cultural identity, and cross cultural understanding. As a result, there is an increased need for Alpha Psi Lambda. This strength has been demonstrated by our growth.

Our History, Our Beginning

In Columbus, Ohio, in May of 1984, a group of undergraduate students, led by Dr. Josue Cruz, Assistant Vice Provost to the Office of Minority Affairs, set out to research the country for other Greek-lettered organizations and learn how to begin a Latino/a fraternity at The Ohio State University.

On March 10, 1985, at The Ohio State University, thirteen men and women were officially initiated into Alpha Psi Lambda. These individuals set the foundation for what is now the nation’s first and largest coed Latino/a fraternity.

It is impossible to underestimate the contribution that the founders of Alpha Psi Lambda have made toward the enrichment of the lives of the Hispanic community. The expansion of Alpha Psi Lambda to universities across the country extends its influence more and more each year. We are grateful to our founders for without their dedication, fortitude and vision, thousands of us would not able to enjoy the rich fruit of Alpha Psi Lambda today.

Familia, Orgullo, y Unidad

The Latino/a culture is strongly rooted in family and support. Alpha Psi Lambda, to its members, is more than just a fraternity. It creates that true family support, brotherhood and sisterhood, at a time in a student’s life when it is most important.

Because it is a Latino/a oriented coed fraternity, Alpha Psi Lambda has welcomed people from a spectrum of various cultures. From Latin America to the Caribbean nations, as well as Europe, Asia, and the United States, Alpha Psi Lambda is one family united.

Let us note that from its infancy, Alpha Psi Lambda has been a bright light with a focus on the Hispanic community and a beacon for people to follow. We are a Hispanic-Interest fraternity not a Hispanic-only fraternity. We have always and will always welcome to our fraternity people from a broad spectrum of cultures. Our strength lies in our ability to focus on our culture with out falling prey to a racist myopia.
