Mission of Alpha Phi Omega
The purpose of this Fraternity shall be to assemble college students in a National Service Fraternity in the fellowship of the principles of Alpha Phi Omega; to develop Leadership, to promote Friendship and provide Service to humanity; and to further the freedom that is our national, educational and intellectual heritage. The rich heritage of Alpha Phi Omega is derived from the fellowship of the principles of the Boy Scouts of America as embodied in the Scout Oath and Scout Oath and Law.
History of Alpha Phi Omega
Alpha Phi Omega was founded by Frank Reed Horton, a World War One veteran. Based on his experiences in the war, he decided to found a collegiate institution based upon a "standard of manhood." He was inspired by what he had learned in Boy Scouts. He gathered a group of former scouts who wanted to become members of this organization. On December 16, 1925 he conducted the first initiation at Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania. Since these early days, APO has grown into the biggest fraternity in the nation, and has even exceeded America's borders by extending into the Philippines, and has made plans to go into Canada and Australia. In 1976 APO historically decided to open membership to women. Today, Alpha Phi Omega is the single most representative undergraduate intercollegiate organization in the United States of America. We take pride in this and want to be even larger. We determine to be larger only because, if what we are and what we represent are important and useful to students, then we should share what we have in order to further our common goals more effectively. We want to share with colleges and universities all across this great land the benefits that Alpha Phi Omega gives to students, their campuses and their communities.
