April 4 Week of Labor Action 2003

Professor Walter Davis speaks about corporate globalization and imperialism at the April 4 Labor Action Rally in the Student Center Plaza..

CHANGE member Ellen Zielinski makes an announcement while speaker Greg Coleridge walks away from the mic. Although it was pouring rain during much of the rally, people continued to give their speeches, aided by the genorosity of a union man who volunteered to stand in the rain and hold an umbrella over the microphone.

CHANGE members pass out leaflets with farm labor organizer Baldemar Velasquez (not in picture) at a local Tops supermarket urging customers to boycott Mt. Olive Pickles as part of a campaign for farmworker justice.

The protest was aimed at forcing Mt. Olive to negotiate with abused and underpaid farmworkers. (There was no call to boycott Tops altogether, as it is a unionized store. However, Baldemar did ask the manager to pull the "sweatshop pickles" from the shelves, which he refused to do.)

Baldemar Velasquez, civil rights activist and phenomenal labor organizer, was the keynote speaker during the 2003 Week of Labor Action.

He is the head of the Farm Labor Organizing Committee (FLOC), based in Toledo, Ohio.

Baldemar is a dramatic speaker and he kept his auidence's attention with heartfelt personal stories about facing injustice and overcoming it.

Baldemar also plays traditional Mexican folk music and he treated us to a few tunes.

Internationally known rabble-rousing folk singer David Rovics took the stage after Baldemar.
