ARA Points of Unity
by Angela Beallor

Student Anti-Racist Action at Kent State University is one of over a hundred Anti-Racist Action collectives. These collectives exist nationally as well as internationally. This network is linked around four core principles that all collectives must uphold. These are the Points of Unity and are what guide our actions. If one is to be a member and/or supporter of ARA it is essential to have a knowledge of these principles. What follows is a brief description of the Points of Unity.

The first of our Points of Unity is "We go where they go." This point refers to confronting fascist organizing. Although there are many different tactics that could be employed in various situations, we believe that is always important to openly confront those promoting a fascist agenda. This does a number of things. It openly shows that there is a vocal and organized opposition to such oppressions as racism, sexism, and homophobia. Thus fascist organizers, anti-fascist organizers, and uninvolved bystanders will see that there are people who will not stand for fascism in all its forms. Ignoring fascism does not make it go away, it only allows it to spread more. We feel that we cannot allow fascists to take the streets of our areas to forward an agenda advocating terror against people of color, women, and queer peoples.

The second principle is "We do not rely on the cops and the courts." This principle does not mean that we will never go to court if it is ever necessary or beneficial. It means that we are honest about what can be accomplished within the "justice" system of the United States. Racism and classism are often upheld by the courts and the police system, preventing those fighting racism from receiving a fair trial. We see that the courts and the police system often uphold what we are working against. Institutionalized racism is alive and well within the "justice" system. If we want to accomplish our goals of ending racism, sexism and homophobia, we must rely upon ourselves.

The third principle is "Non-sectarian defense of other anti-fascists." The ARA network, including Student Anti-Racist Action, does not have a specific political line. We are made up of many different groups and individuals with diverse opinions. We see an attack on one of us as an attack on all. Most everyone willing to take a vocal stance against racism, sexism, homophobia, and fascism deserves some form of support, and we are willing to put our political differences aside in order to help them. We also are open about acknowledging our political differences. We believe in being open about our differences and we all have the right to differ openly. We just have to keep in mind that we must stand behind each other when we are attacked for our anti-fascist, anti-racist beliefs and actions.

The final principle is that ARA "intends to do the hard work necessary to build a broad, strong movement against racism, sexism, anti-Semitism, homophobia, heterosexism, discrimination against the disabled, the oldest and the youngest members of our society. We defend abortion rights and unrestricted reproductive freedom." Within our work, we strive to make clear connections between the various forms of oppression. While fighting the system of racism, we see that we cannot forget about the systems of homophobia and sexism. We recognize that these systems of oppression affect groups of people in different ways but we also see that we cannot fight one without fighting them all. ARA is also vocal in supporting abortion rights and unrestricted reproductive freedom. Sexism will not end while women do not have the right to control their own body. Finally, we see how deeply entrenched racism, sexism, and homophobia are within our society. We will not win this fight without lots of hard work and dedication. We try to encourage this within all of our members. ARA is not in this as a hobby. We care deeply about people affected by racism, sexism and homophobia and so we are dedicated to this struggle. We intend to win! ®
