"Harmony between Believers and Non-believers"
Student speakersMr. Aaron KororaThe purpose of this talk is to help highlight the unique position in which Atheist finds themselves within the confines of our society. An Atheist is assumed to be incapable of the development of moral structure without the guiding principles set forth by a system of beliefs. This is, however, erroneous. Atheism can be considered a system of belief in that credence is given to the arguments against the assumptions of collective religion. For the believer to explain why the Atheist is incorrect serves to further justify their good nature, whereas the Atheist attempting discussion of where the believer may have aired is seen to be a rude and taboo subject. As such, the Atheist finds themselves marginalized as they attempt management of their own beliefs in a society that claims freedom of religion but not freedom of non-religion.The discussion is aimed at helping people to understand this position and the ways in which the Atheist manage their unusual status within society.(Mr. Korora is a doctoral student at Kent State's Cultural Foundations department.) |
