PRIDE! is always up to something! Below you will find the tentative schedule for the 2008/2009 school year. Make sure to join the Yahoo! and Facebook groups to get updates on events!

Our meetings are every Thursday at 8:00 pm on the third floor of the student center in room 317.


Fall Semester, 2008

October
  • 10/16/08 - Trans 101
    Weekly Meeting - Learn about the T in LGBT. Tonight will be a great presentation for everyone to learn a little more about our transgender friends.

  • 10/23/08 - Talk Sex With Sue!Talk Sex With Sue
    Student Center Ballroom, 8:pm- We are making a field trip today kids! Instead of a weekly meeting we are going join Kent State University's Sextoberfest as they welcome Sue Johansen, from Talk Sex With Sue Johanson. It is guaranteed to be a fun time!

      Weekly Meeting - Join us for a fabulous show of talent by the LGBT students and straight allies from Kent State University and the University of Akron!

  • 10/30/08 - Halloween Extravaganza!
    Weekly Meeting - Come and play PRIDE!Cornhole Truth or Dare! We will have a costume contest with prizes, music and snacks!

  • 11/06/08 - Young, Gay and Murdered: A Discussion
    Weekly Meeting - The Day of Silence 2008 was in honor of 15 year old Lawrence King who was murdered at school for being gay. But is that all there is to it? Find out tonight as we read the July 19, 2008 cover story in Newsweek Magazine.

  • 11/10/08 - Paragraph 175 Movie Showing
    Monday, Special documentary presentation, Paragraph 175 in the KIVA. Rupert Everett narrates this sensitive documentary about the Nazi persecution of homosexuals during World War II. Co-Produced with Hillel, the Jewish Studies Program, and more.

  • 11/13/08 - Risk, Safe Sex Game
    Weekly Meeting - Come learn which sexual activities are high, low, or no risk behaviors and win free stuff!

  • 11/20/08 - Transgender Remembrance Day
    Weekly Meeting - TransFamily guest presentation. TransFamily is a support group for transgendered and transsexual people, their parents, partners, children, other family members, friends, and supportive others.

December
  • 12/1/08 - World AIDS Day
    Monday, events to be announced at a later date.

  • 12/4/08 - Safer Sex Day
    Weekly Meeting - Come learn all the super fun ways to "get busy" without getting anything else! Free condoms, a dental dam making contest, and candy for all.

  • 12/5/08 - Friday Night Movie, MilkMilk
    Friday night - Milk is the story of California's first openly gay elected official, Harvey Milk, a San Francisco supervisor who was assassinated along with Mayor George Moscone by San Francisco Supervisor Dan White. Starring Sean Penn, James Franco, Emile Hirsch, Josh Brolin, and Diego Luna. Screening location and time to be announced as release date gets closer.

January

    Weekly Meeting - Get to know more about all the different friends under the umbrella of Transgender, and all those who don't quite fit under the Lesbian, Gay, or Bisexual  umbrella.

February
  • 2/5/09 - The Kinsey Scale
    Weekly Meeting - Take a look at the Kinsey Scale and discover what all the talk is about. Developed in 1948 by Alfred Kinsey, do you think it holds true today? Where do you fall?

  • 6:00 pm, Student Center 317- Come early to PRIDE! Kent and watch the movie, Kinsey, about the man who developed the Kinsey scale. "A look at the life of Alfred Kinsey, a pioneer in the area of human sexuality research, whose 1948 publication 'Sexual Behavior in the Human Male' was one of the first recorded works that saw science address sexual behavior."

    Weekly Meeting - Today we are going to talk about the serious situation of hate crimes against the LGBT community, and in general. We will explore the "Pyramid of Hate" and talk about hate crimes here on campus.

  • 5/7/09 - PRIDE! Kent Senior Rainbow Graduation
    Weekly Meeting - Calling all soon-to-be PRIDE! Kent graduates! Now is your time to shine! We would like to honor you at our first annual Rainbow Graduation! Please email pridekent@yahoo.com for more information or to let us know you are graduating and would like to participate. Graduates at all levels, with all degrees (BA, BS, MA, PHD etc.) are welcome!

  • 8/23/08 - Dorm PRIDE!
    9:00 am-3:00 pm, Jazzman's Coffee House
    Welcome all freshmen and transfer students! Meet with other Kent students and talk about living in the dorms as a lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, or ally. Get a chance to ask questions and get advice from students who have gone through it all.

  • 8/24/08 - Blastoff
    5:00-8:30 pm, Fireworks to follow.
    Kent State students will have the opportunity to meet with local clubs and groups (including PRIDE! Kent) in the annual Blastoff event. Live bands and other entertainment were provided to the students for free.

  • 8/28/08 - First PRIDE! Meeting of the Year
    8:00-9:00 pm, Student Center 317
    Come meet new students, catch up with old ones, and check out PRIDE! at our first meeting of the year.

  • 9/4/08 - Coming Out Discussions
    Weekly Meeting - PRIDE! Kent members are encouraged to share their stories in a safe and welcoming environment. If you have already come out, here is your chance to help those who are still not so sure yet.

  • 9/7/08 - Sunday Scavenger Hunt
    1:00-4:00 pm, PRIDE! Kent Office
    We know that not everyone goes home on the weekends and we want to give those who stay behind a chance to have a good time with other members of PRIDE! Kent. This is also a great time for first year students to learn about the campus with other students, not to mention a great chance to win some PRIZES! Teams will be formed at arrival so no need to choose your team ahead of time.

    5:30 - 8:00 pm, Student Center Multicultural Center
    All profits to benefit PRIDE! Kent and the LGBT Community Center of Greater Cleveland. Some and bid on original pieces of art, handmade jewelry, and more by the Kent State students and community members.

    Weekly Meeting - Learn about the B in LGBT. Tonight will be a great presentation for everyone to learn a little more about our bisexual friends, the "bridge" and those who stay on it forever.

    • Monday, 10/6/08, 9:45pm-11pm - Queers on Ice. Kick off Coming Out Week with PRIDE! Kent at the Kent State Ice Arena

    • Tuesday, 10/7/08, 6:pm-9:pm KSC 313- Movie Marathon - Before & After Stonewall. Before Stonewall is a documentary that uses extensive archival film, movie clips and personal recollections to construct an audiovisual history of the gay community before the Stonewall riots. After Stonewall is a documentary/historical retrospective of the Gay Rights movement from the 1969 Stonewall riots to 1999.

    • Wednesday, 10/8/08, 7:pm KSC 313 - Emmanuel Fellowship Church Presentation. The Emmanuel Fellowship Church is an Akron LGBT friendly church will give a presentation about homosexuality and Christianity, illustrating some of the mistranslations and misinterpretations that have been used by the religious right to condemn homosexuality. Join in our discussion and bring your questions with you.

    • Thursday, 10/9/08 - Weekly Meeting, Speaking Out about Being Out. Students will talk about coming out and how it affects their lives on and off campus.

    Sunday morning/afternoon, outside the PRIDE! Kent office at 12:noon. Come spend time with your PRIDE! Friends and put your sewing skills (or lack thereof) to work on the PRIDE! Kent AIDS Memorial Quilt.

  • 10/12/08 - Matthew Shepard 10th Anniversary Memorial
    Sunday evening there will be a memorial service to remember Matthew Shepard on the 10th anniversary of his murder. Meet at Risman Plaza for a candle light vigil. There will be passages of "The Laramie Project" read as well as others.
