ISPV Overview
Violence is a complicated phenomenon which requires a multidisciplinary approach for effective prevention and intervention. The Institute for the Study and Prevention of Violence (ISPV) at Kent State University is uniquely positioned to provide research and evaluation services to a multitude of community partners such as schools, law enforcement agancies, treatment providers, community organizations, and youth and family services systems. Our multidisciplinary research expertise and experience working in applied settings sets us apart from most other university-based research and policy-oriented partners.
Recent Happenings
The Institute for the Study and Prevention of Violence at Kent State University (ISPV) and the Center for Innovative Practices (CIP) has joined forces in a unique ‘science to service’ effort that will draw upon the strengths of each organization. CIP has relocated from its current home at the Mental Health and Recovery Services Board of Stark County, to ISPV at Kent State University in Kent, Ohio. All of the services that CIP now provides have migrated to ISPV. While this move will provide some immediate short term benefits, there are mid and long term benefits that are particularly intriguing and exciting, such as shared opportunities for research, professional training, and workforce development. The merger took place on July 1, 2008.
ISPV co-sponsered the Presidential Symposium on Research: “Hypervigilance: Fact, Fiction, or Fault”, which featured research conducted at Kent State University as well as other universities and agencies. The symposium was held on April 22, 2008. Check back soon for pictures from that day as well as copies of selected presentations.
Dr. Dan Flannery, the Director of the Intstitute for the Study and Prevention of Violence, recently appeared on the Kojo Nnamdi radio program (WAMU 88.5 FM, American University Radio) to discuss his role in the Fugitive Safe Surrender Program. On August 17th, 2007 ISPV, the Ohio Department of Youth Services, and the Cuyahoga County Board of Commissioners co-sponsered a symposium called: Transforming Juvenile Justice: Integrated Systems, Practice, and Policy. The presentations highlighted coordinated state, county and local collaborations, system integration efforts, and research among child serving systems.
