Giving Voice is the result of a service-learning course, Teaching Poetry in the Schools, taught by Wick Program and Outreach Director David Hassler. Now in its eighth year, this course is offered in the English Department at Kent State University with the support of the Wick Poetry Center. It has two main objectives: to teach college students who are interested in teaching and writing how to conduct poetry writing workshops with students of all ages; and to offer exciting educational experiences and creative writing opportunities to local students and teachers.

Over 200 students from Kent, Akron, Stow, and Canton area public schools share the stage with David Hassler.
