The service-learning based course, Teaching Poetry in the Schools, offers KSU students the opportunity to convey their own passion for poetry and creative writing to the students they teach. It is always very exciting for the local school children to see college students walking into their classrooms and volunteering their time to teach something they care about, something they value. In many cases, these college students can be important role models for the local students.

The Wick Outreach Program promotes an exciting and valuable kind of education that occurs in the margins of our daily lives, in those unmapped spaces between generations, between college campus, local schools, and senior centers, between textbook knowledge and service within a community.

We believe that Giving Voice and the Wick Poetry Center's Outreach Program embodies one of the core values of the Wick Poetry Center, which is "to promote opportunities for the emerging and established poets and poetry audiences locally, regionally, and nationally." The outreach program helps to create not just good writers, but good readers and audiences for poetry.
